Pink Floyd built their legend starting in the late ’60s and soared into the stratosphere in the ’70s, but their later period is no artistic or commercial slouch. The music created by David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason from 1987 onwards has generated record sales of more than 40 million worldwide, and fully ensconced Pink Floyd in rock music’s pantheon. Now, the band’s 1987–2019 period is getting its first comprehensive retrospective—but let’s start small here, with the highlights editions of "The Later Years." The CDs conclude with live 1987–94 recordings of "One of These Days," "Astronomy Domine," "The Dogs of War," "Run Like Hell," "The Great Gig in the Sky," "Sorrow," "Money" (last four are from that Knebworth show), unreleased 1994 studio recordings ("David’s Blues," "Rick’s Theme," "Slippery Guitar") and more. Next, you’ll find surround and hi-res mixes of "A Momentary Lapse of Reason," "The Division Bell" and the unreleased 1994 studio recordings on a Blu-Ray disc. The rest of the Blu-Rays and also the DVDs bring you "Delicate Sound of Thunder" (restored and remixed), "Pulse" (restored and re-edited), the Knebworth concert and also their 1989 Venice concert, music videos, bonus live tracks from "Delicate Sound of Thunder," a 1994 tour rehearsal, concert screen films from ’87 and ’94 and a disc of unreleased material and documentaries. Band of Gypsys—were four concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC: two on New Year’s Eve 1969 and two on New Year’s Day 1970. The shows were professionally recorded and found Jimi in fiery and forward-looking form. At the first show, he and the band played not a single song Jimi had commercially released. For the next three, he peppered his sets with reworked versions of earlier classics plus new material. This band was kaput by the end of January 1970, but the Gypsys’ mark had been made, as their powerful and pioneering mix of funk, rock and soul made outspoken devotees out of Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, Bootsy Collins and many future hip-hoppers. The "Band of Gypsys" album drew from the two January 1 shows and subsequent releases drew from all four, but many of these precious performances have sat unheard for 50 years. That’s what scared off some critics and even Gene’s own label (Asylum) at the time, leaving "No Other" all but in the dust upon its release. But ever since, this ambitiously conceived, lushly produced wonder has risen in estimation, and is held up as one of Gene’s greatest creations.
