The Stones faced a big challenge in creating a follow-up to their masterpiece "Exile on Main St.," but this 1973 LP triumphantly soared to #1 on both sides of the Atlantic. As ramshackle as this outing is, the greatness of these rockers and ballads has since greatly elevated the esteem for this album, which divided critics upon its release. The 2020 stereo mix of "Goats Head Soup" (available here on CD or vinyl, which was half-speed mastered at Abbey Road) includes "Angie," "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)," "Dancing with Mr. D.," "Star Star" and the rest of the original release. The 2-CD/double-vinyl deluxe editions also unveil three previously unheard Rolling Stones songs ("Criss Cross," "All the Rage" and "Scarlet") and feature bonus alternate mixes, instrumental versions and demos. Let’s move next to the super deluxe 4LP vinyl box: the new stereo mix of the album and all the aforementioned bonus tracks plus "The Brussels Affair," recorded live at the Forest National Arena in October 1973 and pressed on 180-gram vinyl: "Brown Sugar," "Gimme Shelter," "Tumbling Dice," "Angie," "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)," "You Can’t Always Get What You Want," "Midnight Rambler," "Jumpin’ Jack Flash," "Street Fighting Man," "Honky Tonk Women," "Happy" and more (that show was previously only available via the Stones’ official bootleg series). Lastly, we have the 4-CD super deluxe box, which contains all the tracks of the 4-LP edition and also a Blu-Ray audio disc (Dolby Atmos, 96/24 hi-res stereo and 96/24 DTS HD Master Audio 5.1) plus a 120-page book packed with photos and essays and four 1973 reproduction tour posters.
