Book Of Love
Book Of Love (2cd)
Though their 1986 debut album still remains in print in its original form, even fans of the band who own that CD will have to pick up this set, as the band has contributed an entire extra disc’s worth of bonus material! And it’s good bonus material, too, like the very demo ('Boy') that got them signed to Sire Records by Seymour Stein. Other bonus cuts include demos of 'I Touch Roses; Lost Souls; You Make Me Feel So Good', and 'White Lies'; live performances of 'Boy' and 'Happy Day', and rare versions of 'I Touch Roses' (Daniel Miller mix); 'Boy' (dub version); 'Modigliani' (instrumental), and 'We Three Kings'. 11 bonus tracks in all—like a whole additional album!

Book Of Love
Lullaby
1988’s 'Lullaby' was the band’s highest-charting album, thanks in large part to the two killer cuts that led off the record: their remix of Mike Oldfield’s 'Tubular Bells (Theme from the Exorcist)' and 'Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls', which was quite possibly the first song about AIDS ever to hit the charts. This deluxe reissue includes the bonus extended mix of 'Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls; Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls' (Regan’s House medley); 'Lullaby' (Pleasant Dream mix); 'Witchcraft' (extended mix), and 'Enchantra'.

Book Of Love
Candy Carol
Highlighted by the tracks 'Alice Everyday; Counting the Rosaries', and 'Sunny Day' (which was featured in the film 'Silence of the Lambs'), this 1991 album shifted in a more psychedelic direction, and was rewarded with another chart entry. An 'Everyday Glo Mix' and 'Sam the Butcher Mix' of 'Alice Everyday' are among the bonus tracks, which also include the single remix of 'Sunny Day' and the 'Happiness and Love Mix' of 'Counting the Rosaries'.

Book Of Love
Lovebubble
'Lovebubble' (1993) was Book of Love’s last album for Sire (they disbanded shortly after its release), and it certainly does show the various band members moving in different directions, making it an interesting, eclectic listen. We’ve added the 'Go Bottom Go Top' and 'Swinging Boy Pop' mixes of 'Boy Pop'; the 'Sweet and Sticky Mix' of 'Hunny Hunny' (the band’s ABBA tribute), and the 'Late Nite Chat Mix' of 'Chatterbox' as bonus tracks!

Dead Boys
We Have Come For Your Children [Digipak]
Dead Boys: Stiv Bators (vocals). Originally released in 1978, the second and final album by Cleveland punk heroes the Dead Boys was widely panned at the time, viewed as a move toward the mainstream. In retrospect, the cleaner and more metal-oriented sound seems an obvious precursor of hardcore, the American punk style that would dominate the 1980s, and singer Stiv Bators rarely sounded more inspired in his aggression. This expansive reissue on the Noble Rot label features a hybrid SACD in a digipak. Coming off one of punk rock's early classic albums, 1977's raw and rough Young Loud & Snotty, you'd think the Dead Boys would have followed the same winning formula on their sophomore release. But as We Have Come for Your Children proves, the album didn't come close to matching the fury of their debut. The reasons for this fumble can be attributed to a few things, but chiefly, it was a poor producer choice (ex-Mountain bassist Felix Pappalardi, who really had no business producing a punk band, and obviously wanted to tame the group). That said, Children isn't a complete atrocity, however -- much of the material is strong, and it would have benefited greatly from a grittier production (there was talk of having ex-Stooges guitarist James Williamson produce the album at the time, which would have probably improved the end result). Still, this is the Dead Boys album that contains one of their greatest all-time tracks, "Ain't It Fun," a "live fast, die young" tale that is quite eerie coming from now-deceased singer Stiv Bators (and was later covered by Guns N' Roses). Elsewhere, you can't help but wonder how much better such promising tracks as "(I Don't Wanna Be No) Catholic Boy" and "Flame Thrower Love" would have turned out in the hands of another producer. Since the Dead Boys' discography is short, fans should definitely try to hunt down a copy of We Have Come for Your Children (as of 2005, the CD version is only available as an import); just don't expect the same knockout punch that Young Loud & Snotty generates. ~ Greg Prato

Audio Mixer: Jeff Hendrickson. Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. Recording information: Alpha; Andora; Can-Am; Entourage; Johnny Yuma; Track record. Photographer: Karen Miller. Unknown Contributor Role: Michael Mason . Guitar instrumentalist Marc Bonilla is to Robin Trower what Trower was to Jimi Hendrix, a slavish imitator who nevertheless goes off on tangents all his own. (Well, actually, some of Bonilla's tangents belong to Jeff Beck.) So, it's funny that on his second album, American Matador, Bonilla includes not one but two versions of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale," the initial hit by Procol Harum, Trower's old group. And what's the joke? Trower didn't join the band until shortly after that song was recorded! ~ William Ruhlmann

Marc Bonilla
Ee Ticket [pa] [Digipak]
Personnel: Marc Bonilla (guitar, guitar synthesizer); Ronnie Montrose (slide guitar); Keith Emerson (piano); Kevin Gilbert (keyboards, vocals); Dave Moreno (bass); Troy Luccketta (drums); Don Frank (drums, percussion). Recorded at Kev's Livingroom, Sherman Oaks, California and Johnny Yuma Recording Studios, Burbank, California. Personnel: Marc Bonilla (guitar, synthesizer, guitar synthesizer); Ronnie Montrose (guitar, slide guitar); Kevin Gilbert (piano, organ, Mellotron); Keith Emerson (piano); David Moreno (bass guitar); Don Frank, Don Frank, Troy Luccketta (drums). Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. Recording information: Johnny Yuma Recording; Kev's Livingroom. An instructor at the Guitar Institute of Technology and composer for film and television, Marc Bonilla appears to owe his opportunity to make EE Ticket, his debut album, to his stint in the touring version of Patrick Leonard and Kevin Gilbert's band Toy Matinee; Gilbert engineered and produced the album, which is being released by Reprise Records, Toy Matinee's label. But if Reprise intended to introduce a new guitar hero to compete with the likes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Bonilla doesn't sound like those players. Maybe it's his academic background, but he is much more of a classicist than an innovator, on the evidence of EE Ticket. This album may be a 1991 release, but it sounds like the '80s never happened. Rather, Bonilla stands squarely in the post-Jimi Hendrix '70s tradition of Robin Trower, Ritchie Blackmore, and, especially, Jeff Beck. He can be fleet of finger (for example on "Hit and Run"), but he never goes for the kind of showoff speed that Eddie Van Halen delights in. Rather, he is ever mindful of melody and logical progression, steeped in the 1960s (there are stray references to the Rolling Stones and the Beatles), and always tasteful. His technique is assured, but it is never displayed for its own sake. In this sense, EE Ticket is reminiscent of such '70s Beck albums as Blow by Blow and Wired. Many fans of instrumental guitar rock will applaud that, but for those who have become infatuated with the sonic explorations of Satriani and Vai, this will sound old-school. Marc Bonilla comes to play, not to shred. ~ William Ruhlmann

Toy Matinee
Toy Matinee: Special Edition [Bonus Tracks] [pa] [Digipak] *
Toy Matinee: Kevin Gilbert (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Patrick Leonard (keyboards, background vocals). Additional personnel: Bill Bottrell (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Tim Pierce (guitar); Jon Clarke, Donald Markese, Jon Kip (clarinet); Guy Pratt (bass); Brian MacLeod (drums, percussion); Julian Lennon, Derga McBroom (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Patrick Leonard. Composer: Kevin Gilbert. Formed in 1990 by keyboardist, producer, and composer Patrick Leonard and the late singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Gilbert, the Los Angeles-based Toy Matinee was known for its polished and carefully arranged pop/rock ditties. A studio savvy duo who were comfortable with collaborations, Gilbert had also joined forces with Sheryl Crow, Michael Jackson, and Tina Turner, while Leonard has worked with such pop luminaries as Elton John, Madonna, Roger Waters, and Jewel. With Special Edition, the band's self-titled 1990 album is re-released along with a 28-page booklet and four additional "bonus" tracks: Kevin Gilbert's "Blank Page" and demo takes of "Last Plane Out," "Things She Said," and "There Was a Little Boy." "Last Plane Out," the CD's opening track is -- like most of the band's songs -- characterized by diatonic vocal harmonies, a tight rhythm section, blues guitar riffs, and a hook-heavy chorus. With "Turn It On Salvador," a song dedicated to Salvador Dali and immersed in appropriately surreal lyrics, Julian Lennon chimes in with backing vocals in a section that sounds particularly Beatlesque. Sal's Clarinet Trio -- Jon Clarke, Jon Kip, and Donald Markese -- closes "Turn It On Salvador" with a swinging melodic phrase that compliments Leonard's concordant piano passages. The band's songs are mostly unique, though shades of a Pink Floyd ballad can be heard at the beginning of the band's self-titled track, and Steeley Dan-sounding chord progressions are undeniably present on the album's seventh cut, "The Ballad of Jenny Ledge." All in all, this Toy Matinee re-release offers thoughtfully constructed and exceptionally played pop/rock songs alongside a number of slightly derivative songs that have a bit too much of that teased-out 1990s hair band aura. ~ John Vallier An upgraded and expanded reissue of the collaboration between producer/keyboardist Patrick Leonard and late vocalist Patrick Salvador. The album, produced by Bill Bottrell, leans in an interesting assortment of directions, tossing out satire, goofiness, and social concern during its course, with the production nodding to Steely Dan in one direction and the Beatles in another. It may be that Leonard and Gilbert attempted to do too many things with the songs, considering that they kick off with a satire connected to the Gulf War, then follow with a daffy ode to Salvador Dali, and then jump into a sentimental pop ballad. The album never caught on beyond a faithful cult. The 2001 reissue presents the original songs in remastered form, which adds to their impact. "Last Plane Out" seems even more sarcastic than ever -- along with five demos (one of Gilbert's "Blank Page") that give the listener a bit of a look at the working process, though these tracks are likely to wind up being mostly ignored after a couple of listens. It's good to have the reissue to hand, however, because there is a lot to treasure here. Gilbert's untimely death, regrettably, denies us the chance of a follow-up. ~ Steven McDonald Two of the pop world's most acclaimed behind-the-scenes artisans, songwriter/producer Patrick Leonard (who has worked with Madonna and Elton John) and songwriter Kevin Gilbert (a multi-talented artist whose early demise was a huge loss), created this highly unique and wonderfully original pop album in 1989. Here, TOY MATINEE is remastered and includes five previously unreleased tunes.

3rd Matinee

All songs written or co-written by Patrick Leonard and Richard Page. 3rd Matinee: Richard Page (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Patrick Leonard (keyboards, background vocals); Guy Pratt (bass guitar); Brian MacLeod (drums, percussion). Personnel: James Harrah, Marc Bonilla, Tim Pierce (guitar); Steve Porcaro (synthesizer); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Luis Conte (percussion, percussion programming); Valerie Pinkston-Mayo, Dorian Holley, Jerry Jordan, Nick Laird-Clowes, Julie Delgado (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Jerry Jordan. Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. Recording information: Johnny Yuma Recording. Illustrator: Mark Ryden. Photographer: Michael Wilson . As 3rd Matinee's debut album Meanwhile was released on April 26, 1994, "I'll Remember," a song co-written by the group's principals, A-list producer Patrick Leonard and former Mr. Mister leader Richard Page, with Madonna, was bulleted in the Top 20 in her recording. That song does not appear on Meanwhile, and the disc does not sound like a Madonna album minus Madonna, however. The group's name recalls Leonard's previous group, Toy Matinee, which also released an album on Reprise Records three-plus years ago, and many of the subsidiary musicians are the same. But Toy Matinee was co-led by a different singer, Kevin Gilbert, with a different musical sensibility, and Meanwhile doesn't sound like Toy Matinee, either. So, what does it sound like? It sounds like a Richard Page solo album produced by Patrick Leonard. Page has a throaty, expressive voice that reportedly earned him invitations to join Chicago and Toto after Mr. Mister split up. Instead, he teamed up with Leonard, and, from the sound of this album, the two spent a lot of time listening to Peter Gabriel and at least a little listening to Steve Winwood and Sting. The result is an album of evocative, sophisticated pop/rock full of yearning and moodiness, albeit without real depth. Gabriel has become less and less productive, taking six years to follow up Us properly with So in 1992, so fans may get impatient as the years go by. If so, this Gabriel-lite effort may help them cope, but it remains the work of talented musicians lacking a true spark of their own creativity. ~ William Ruhlmann
